One of the problems you have with an open floor plan is decorating and painting. I have to take it one step at a time. I've finally selected a paint color and hopefully that will be the next step to complete.
I believe it's easier to decorate a kitchen with an open area. You have the freedom to install more cabinets and place as many pieces of furniture as you desire. Just don't overdo it. A crowded kitchen doesn't look good, after all. Anyway, plan for the renovation carefully so you'll end up with a kitchen that you'll be proud of.
